Quick answer

What is a GIF compressor?

A GIF compressor makes an animated GIF smaller by resizing its frames, dropping frames and reducing its colour palette, then re-encoding it. HuPNG does this in your browser: pick a target size such as 5 MB and it tries up to six sizes, keeping the best result under the limit. Nothing is uploaded.

  1. 1Drop your animated GIF, up to 50 MB.
  2. 2Pick a target size, or tune size, frames and colours by hand.
  3. 3Compare with the original and download.

How the GIF compressor works

  1. 01

    Read

Your browser decodes every frame and its timing. The file never leaves the tab.

  2. 02

    Resize

Frames are scaled down in steps, from larger to smaller widths.

  3. 03

    Reduce

If resizing is not enough, frames are merged and colours trimmed. Loop length stays the same.

  4. 04

    Encode

A new GIF is written and measured. The best result under your target is kept.

Privacy and client-side processing

Your GIF is opened with browser APIs and re-encoded on your device. No upload happens, so there is no server copy, no queue and no account. You can verify it in your browser network panel: the file does not appear.

What it can and cannot do

It can shrink dimensions, merge frames and reduce colours, usually by half or more. It cannot restore lost detail, and a long, high-resolution GIF may stay above a small target. In that case it tells you the smallest size it found.

Tips for smaller GIFs

  1. 1

    Start with a target size

Choose the limit you need and let HuPNG search for settings.

Why: It tests several sizes for you, which is faster than guessing sliders.

  2. 2

    Resize before anything else

Dimensions are the biggest lever. Cutting width by 30% removes about half the pixels.

Why: File size follows pixel count, and a smaller frame loses less than fewer colours.

  3. 3

Keep every 2nd frame on long loops

Frames are merged rather than cut, so the animation lasts as long as before.

Why: Half the frames means roughly half the data, with slightly less smooth motion.

  4. 4

    Cut colours on flat graphics

Logos, UI recordings and pixel art often look the same at 32 or 64 colours.

Why: Fewer colours means smaller palette tables and more repeated pixels to pack.

  5. 5

Leave dithering off unless you see banding

Turn it on only for gradients, shadows and photographic frames.

Why: Dithering adds noise, and noise is the hardest thing for GIF to compress.

GIF compressor FAQ

How do I compress a GIF?

Drop your GIF onto the tool, choose a target size such as 5 MB, and press Compress GIF. HuPNG tries up to six sizes, then fewer frames and colours if needed, and keeps the best result under your target. Compare it with the original, then download.

Is the GIF compressor free, and is my file uploaded?

It is free with no signup. Your GIF is read and re-encoded by your browser on your device, so 0 bytes are uploaded. HuPNG Pro, with batch and presets, is coming soon and is optional.

How do I compress a GIF to 10 MB?

Select the 10 chip under Make it smaller than. If your GIF is already below 10 MB the tool says so and asks for a smaller target. Otherwise it searches for the best version that fits.

How do I compress a GIF for Discord?

Upload limits depend on your account and server, so check the limit in Discord first. Then pick the chip at or just under it, or type an exact value in the Custom field. Emoji and stickers have much smaller limits, so use Manual with a small size and 32 colours.

Why is my GIF so large?

A GIF stores every frame as a separate indexed image. File size grows with width, height and frame count, and noisy or photographic frames compress badly. See Why animated GIFs get so large below.

Will compressing reduce quality?

Yes, in a controlled way. Smaller dimensions, fewer frames and fewer colours all cost some detail. Target mode starts with resizing and only goes further if it must, and you can compare side by side before you download.

What is the maximum GIF size?

Free: up to 50 MB per GIF, one at a time. Bigger files and whole folders are planned for Pro, which is coming soon.

Why could it not reach my target size?

Long, detailed or high-resolution GIFs can stay above a small target even at the smallest settings. HuPNG then shows the smallest version it found after 6 tries. Try a larger target, switch to Manual with fewer frames and colours, or trim the GIF first.

Is there a better format than GIF for small files?

For photographic or long clips, MP4 or WebM video is usually far smaller, and Lottie suits vector animation. GIF still wins on compatibility: it plays in chat, email and documents almost everywhere.

How do I compress a GIF to 1 MB?

Choose the 1 MB chip and press Compress GIF. A 1 MB GIF usually means a small image, so expect the tool to scale it to roughly 200 to 320 px wide, and to merge frames or cut colours if that is not enough. Short loops of two to three seconds reach 1 MB most easily. If it cannot get there, it shows the smallest version it found and you can trim the clip or switch to Manual with every 3rd frame and 32 colours.

How do I compress a GIF for email?

Pick 5 MB, or lower if your recipient is on a strict mail server. Gmail allows attachments up to 25 MB in total, but many company inboxes accept less, and big GIFs load slowly in the message. A 400 to 600 px wide GIF at under 5 MB is a safe choice. For images embedded in the body of a message, smaller is better still.

How do I make a GIF small enough for a Slack or Discord emoji?

Custom emoji limits are small: Discord emoji must be under 256 KB and Slack emoji under 128 KB. Type 0.25 or 0.12 into the Custom field, or use Manual with the size at 10 to 25%, every 2nd frame and 32 colours. Emoji display tiny, so dropping detail is rarely visible. Check the current limit in the app, because platforms change them.

Can I compress a GIF on iPhone, Android, Mac or Windows?

Yes. The compressor runs in any modern browser, so there is nothing to install and no app. Open this page on your phone or computer, choose the GIF from your files or photos, and download the result. Very large GIFs can run out of memory on older phones, in which case use a smaller target or a laptop.

Can I compress a GIF without losing quality?

Not completely. GIF is already limited to 256 colours per frame and has no lossless way to shrink further, so any real saving costs some detail. The least visible savings are a smaller pixel size and merged frames on long loops. Use the side-by-side preview and stop at the first setting that looks fine.

How do I reduce GIF file size for a website or GitHub README?

Aim for 1 to 5 MB so the page loads quickly. Use a target such as 2 MB, check the preview, and download. If the clip is long or photographic, an MP4 or WebM video is usually many times smaller than any GIF. Our GIF to Lottie and Video to GIF tools cover the other formats.

Does compressing a GIF keep the animation and loop?

Yes. Compression keeps the loop and the total running time. When frames are dropped their delay is added to the frame that stays, so the animation does not speed up. Transparency is kept too.

Is there a GIF compressor with no watermark and no signup?

This one has no watermark, no signup, no ads inside the tool and no file upload. Your GIF is processed on your device and the downloaded file has nothing added to it.

Guide

Everything about making GIFs smaller — what works, what does not, and when to leave GIF behind.

How to compress a GIF

  1. 1

    Load your GIF

Drop an animated GIF onto the workspace or press browse. Files up to 50 MB are supported and stay on your device.

  2. 2

    Choose a target size

Pick 1, 2, 5, 8, 10, 15 or 25 MB, or type your own value. Use the limit of the app you are sending to.

  3. 3

    Or tune it by hand

Switch to Manual to set size, frames kept and colours yourself. Add a shared palette or dithering if you need them.

  4. 4

    Press Compress GIF

Progress shows each try and its width. Cancel at any point with Esc and your original is untouched.

  5. 5

    Compare and download

Review original and compressed side by side, check the saving, then download. Not happy? Adjust and retry.

Why animated GIFs get so large

A GIF has no video codec. Each frame is stored as its own indexed-colour image, with only simple tricks to skip pixels that did not change. Size therefore grows with how much picture you ask it to hold.

Pixel count

Every frame stores width × height pixels. A 800 × 450 frame holds 360,000 of them.

Frame count

Ninety-six frames means ninety-six images. Long loops and high frame rates add up fast.

Colours and dithering

Each frame can use up to 256 colours. Dithering simulates more shades with patterns that pack poorly.

Noise and motion

Film grain, gradients and full-frame motion change most pixels every frame, so little can be reused.

Compress a GIF to 1 MB, 2 MB, 5 MB, 10 MB and more

The tool has a one-click chip for the sizes people ask for most. Pick the one you need, or type an exact value in the Custom field. These are the settings Target mode tends to land on, so you know what to expect before you start. Results depend on the GIF: flat graphics shrink much further than photographic clips.

If a GIF will not reach its target, the tool shows the smallest version it found. Try the next chip up, trim the clip, or switch to Manual and keep every 3rd frame. For still images use the Image Compressor, and for Lottie files the Lottie Optimizer.

Compress a GIF for Discord, Slack, email and your device

Every app has its own file size limit, and the numbers change, so always check the current one. These notes cover the limits we are confident about and the settings that work well for each case.

Discord and Slack emoji

Discord emoji must be under 256 KB and stickers under 512 KB, and Slack emoji under 128 KB. Use the Custom field (for example 0.25 MB), or Manual at 10 to 25% size with 32 colours. Emoji are shown tiny, so the lost detail rarely shows.

Email and Gmail

Gmail accepts up to 25 MB of attachments, but many company mail servers accept less and large GIFs load slowly. Target 5 MB or under, around 400 to 600 px wide.

Websites and GitHub README

Aim for 1 to 5 MB so the page stays fast. If the loop is long or photographic, convert it to MP4 or WebM instead, which is usually many times smaller than a GIF.

X (Twitter) and social posts

Platforms set their own GIF limits and often convert uploads to video. Check the current limit, choose the nearest chip below it, and keep the width at 640 px or less for a clean result.

iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows

The compressor runs in the browser, so it works the same on a phone or a computer. Pick the GIF from your files, compress, and save the result. No app and no account needed.

Chat, forums and documents

Limits depend on the server, account and app, and they change over time. Look up the current number, pick the chip at or just under it, or enter it in the Custom field.

Need a different size afterwards? Resize the frames in Manual mode, make a GIF from a clip with Video to GIF, or clear a background first with the GIF Background Remover.

GIF vs video and Lottie

GIF

Best for compatibility

Plays almost anywhere: chat, email, forums and documents. Large for long or detailed clips, limited to 256 colours per frame.

MP4 and WebM video

Best for photos and long clips

Usually many times smaller than GIF at the same quality, but some apps and email clients will not autoplay them.

Lottie

Best for vector animation

Tiny files that stay sharp at any size. Suits icons, UI motion and illustrations, not filmed footage.

Need a different format? Try GIF to Lottie, MP4 to Lottie or Video to GIF.

Troubleshooting

Could not read this GIF
The file may be damaged or cut short. Export it again from the source, or open and re-save it in an editor.
The result is not smaller
Already tight GIFs may not shrink at the same size. Lower the size slider, keep every 2nd frame, or use 64 colours.
It could not reach my target
Pick a larger target, or use Manual with fewer colours and frames. For very long clips, trim the GIF first.
Colours look banded or blotchy
Raise colours to 256 and turn on Dithering. Shared palette can also cause shifts, so switch it off to compare.
The animation looks choppy
Keep all frames or Every 2nd, and reduce the size instead.
The tab is slow or compression failed
Large GIFs need memory. Close other tabs, try a smaller target, or reduce the size in Manual mode.
